The Best Day of My Life

Squirmy recently celebrated a birthday, and this kid has been spoiled just about everywhere he has gone for the last week.  He soaked up and thoroughly enjoyed all of the extra attention from everyone around him.  But no matter what happened, his reaction always seemed to be the same:

I think that his first birthday gift this year came in the mail from his grandparents far away.  Like most kids, He loves getting mail with his name on it.  He hugged the letter to his chest and then excitedly started to tear it open.  When he realized that it wasn’t just a card, but that this card contained some money for him, he exclaimed “This is the best day of my life!”

While we were at Church many of his adopted grandparents stopped to say “Happy Birthday”.  One of these special people had found a nice little toy to surprise him.  It was an awesome little action figure that moved and made noises – a parents favorite kind of toy!  As we headed home that night, we all put up with the annoying thing as Squirmy found out just how many noises this toy could make.  Once he was content that he had made every noise possible, he leaned back in his chair and said, “This is the best day of my life!”

Not to be outdone, Nana came by with an early gift.  I walked in the door that night and was quickly ushered to the couch.  Squirmy had hidden his new treasures under a blanket in the living room.  With great fanfare he revealed the new loot he had received.  As he finished showing everything off he sighed, “This is the best day of my life.”

When it came time for his actual birthday party – well, it was the best day of his life!

Playing with some of the new loot.

The “this is the best day of my life” face

It’s amazing what you can get away with on your birthday!

The messier you get, the better it tastes!

Hey, if Squirmy can do it…

Hey, if the kids can do it…

I’m telling you – It does make it taste better!

We really had a good time together!  But the spoiling wasn’t over quite yet.  The next morning, my Beautiful Bride got up early and treated the little monster to a special breakfast.  I bet you can’t guess how he responded!  He slobbered up that donut and said, “This is the best day of my life!”  This happy little guy could say this because he was not comparing the day to yesterday, or any other day for that matter.  He was simply enjoying the blessings of ‘today’.

I guess that sometimes we miss out on the blessings because we are too focused on yesterday.  We can’t enjoy the gifts God gives us because we are too busy trying to see if they measure up to all the other wonderful things He has done in the past.  Perhaps we would be able to enjoy things a little more if we would simply take a child’s approach to life.  Today – this is the best day of my life!

Do you think that we lose some of the joys of today because we try to hard to recapture yesterday?  Memories are wonderful things, and I am grateful for them.  But, is it possible that we can spend so much time thinking of the past that we miss out on the blessings of the now?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Sure, you can send this article to anybody you want. And, if you’re REAL awesome, you’ll even tell them where it came from!
